Recycling center to be re-launched in Zabalj – GIZ donates waste collection vehicle to the municipality
The waste collection truck, as well as 1,080 baskets for the primary waste separation for households in the Municipality of Zabalj, have been provided within the “Waste Management in the Context of Climate Change” project run by the Ministry of Environmental Protection in partnership with GIZ.
GIZ representative Klaus Schmidt said that they operated on behalf of the German government, the largest donor in Serbia for years.
– We want to support the Municipality of Zabalj by providing this truck, because we believe it is very interesting that it has a recycling center – Schmidt said.
Abramovic pointed out that one of the ministry's main goal was to enable an adequate management of waste and waste waters and that they tried in every way to establish a legal and a strategic framework for the development of that system and then to try to help all municipalities in Serbia with the realization.
The issue of separation, removal and disposal of municipal waste is one of the most important environmental issues in local communities, and each instance of concrete help is a step forward, the Ministry of Environmental Protection says.
The president of the Municipality of Zabalj, Cedomir Bozic, says that this local self-government wanted to improve each segment of the society, including environmental protection.
The waste collection vehicle has a capacity of 18 cubic meters and is a pre-requirement for the implementation of the primary separation of waste from households and the re-launching of the municipal recycling center, along with the economic strengthening and the improvement of the social standing of informal collectors of secondary raw materials and socially vulnerable groups.
