Beginning in March 2019, Serbian citizens will be able to pay bills by using a face recognition system, the governor of the National Bank of Serbia, Jorgovanka Tabakovic, announces for Tanjug.

The NBS plans to launch this new service, a part of the instant payments solution, launched in October 2018, in the first quarter of 2019.

The exact date will be known after the meeting of Moneyval, the Committee of Experts on the Evaluation of Anti-Money Laundering Measures and the Financing of Terrorism, scheduled for January 23.

Serbia’s progress in the implementation of money laundering regulations will be examined at the meeting. If the institution gives a positive opinion, the new service might be launched as soon as February.

Paying through tablets, phones or Skype requires no new technological solutions and won’t cost banks, Tabakovic says and points out that the system is safe for users both in terms of protection of personal data and potential money laundering.
