The signing of the agreement on the construction of a new icebreaker is expected in February 2019, and the Serbian rivers will be “defended” by a mixed team of icebreakers from Serbia, Hungary and Romania in the meantime, as has been the case in the past years, the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Water Management told Tanjug.

The budget of Serbia for 2018 features an amount of RSD 300 million for the preparation of the project-technical documentation and the construction of an icebreaker.

– As no icebreakers are available for purchase at the market, the preparation of the documentation based on which one will be built has started – the ministry says.

The documentation, they say, is nearly completed and it defines the technical characteristics of the icebreaker, accepted and authorized by the competent organ, the Authority for Determination of the Seaworthiness.

The public call for the construction of the new icebreaker was opened on December 10, 2017, and the signing of the agreement with the contractor is expected in February 2019.
