How to prepare pets for cold days?
Allergies
A heated living space, less air flow and increased humidity are ideal for the development of mites and other allergens. Skin allergies are the most common, but there are also respiratory allergies which may require a visit to the veterinarian.
Colds
As the days grow colder and more rainy, the chance of your pet catching a cold increases. This can be prevented by having your pet wear a small coat or a sweater.
Beware of heaters
Transitional periods within the heating season can be tricky, as central heating is not at its maximum, which means that a lot of people use heaters. However, pets can get serious burns from contact with heating devices, so extra caution is advised, and you shouldn't forget about their dangerous habit of nibbling on cables either.
Your medicine is their poison!
The symptoms of arthritis are especially bad in the winter. Make sure that your medical drugs do not end up in your pets, as they can cause serious liver damage.
Cold weather requires more calories
Cold weather increases the appetite and pets should be allowed to eat more, as they need more calories. Still, if you fear that your pet might gain too much weight, a veterinarian can prepare an adequate diet plan.
