A special -purpose budget for smart cities will be included in the innovations budget for next year, The Minister without portfolio responsible for innovations and technological development Nenad Popovic told RTS.

Smart Cities budget will be available to both big cities such as Belgrade, Novi Sad and Nis as well as to smaller towns.

– Our goal is to implement digitalization in smaller towns as well and make them into smart cities in order to provide our citizens with better transport and medical services and reduce the time people spend in waiting rooms and also to enable the use of electronic documents so they won't have to go to a city municipality to get them, Popovic told RTS.

Before opening the second Smart City Festival in Belgrade, Popovic said that many were afraid to embrace new technologies but that they were crucial in reducing lines and waiting time and they make the service accessible and cheaper both for citizens and the state.

– Digitalization is our future, Serbia is catching up, we just have to continue in the same direction, said Popovic
