This morning, at 8 o'clock sharp, 16 stores of the German discount retail chain Lidl opened in 12 towns of Serbia.

Five stores opened in Belgrade, as well as one each in Nis, Novi Sad, Kragujevac, Subotica, Uzice, Leskovac, Bor, Smederevo, Sombor, Sabac and Zrenjanin, and people started gathering between 5 and 6 am to make their first purchase here.

The investment of the German company in Serbia has reached the amount of EUR 205 million. A total of 1,500 workers have been employed, and of the 1,500 articles on Lidl's shelves, 350 are made in Serbia.

Lidl promises the best quality/price ratio in Serbia, as confirmed at the opening of the store in Vojislava Ilica Street in Zvezdara by Tomislav Sapina, the director of Lidl Serbia.

– We will offer Lidl brands, fresh fruit, vegetables and products from Lidl's bakery, more than 350 products made by domestic producers, and above all, we will offer the best ratio of quality and prices in Serbia. This is an important day, as it marks the beginning. But it's only a start. We are here to stay and develop together – Sapina emphasized.

The opening ceremony was attended by Serbian president Aleksandar Vucic, Ambassador of Germany to Serbia Thomas Schieb. Minister of Trade, Tourism and Telecommunications of Serbia Rasim Ljajic, Mayor of Belgrade Zoran Radojicic and numerous business partners.

Commenting on what Lidl's arrival means for the Serbian market, Ljajic emphasized that the presence of the German discount store chain was important primarily for consumers, contributing to the variety of the offer.

– It's also good for our labor market, because other retail chains will have to step up their service and offer more affordable prices and higher salaries – Ljajic said and pointed out that the retail market in Serbia was the most promising one in the region and that the arrival of Lidl was a signal for other investors in the sector.

Lidl stores are open seven days a week from 8 am till 10 pm.

Some of the brands available at Lidl stores in Serbia are Fin Carre, which includes Lidl's best sold milk chocolate, Sondey confectionery, Alesto appetizers, Lupilu baby food, Cien cosmetics, W5 home cleaning products, but also other products subject to production and quality control in line with German standards.

Discount offers start on Thursdays and Mondays. The offer of non-food products, such as clothes, gardening tools, small household appliances and other products changes frequently, and another special feature of Lidl is that the prices are displayed above the products, the company says.

Let us remind that Lidl is a chain of standardized stores. Those in Serbia are built in line with a more recent concept, which entails a modern design, more retail space, more spacious parking spots, more natural light and increased energy efficiency.

Seven more Lidl stores will open by the end of the year: in Belgrade (at Ada Ciganlija), Vrsac, Indjija, Jagodina, Kikinda, Krusevac and Pancevo, and the company announces further expansion.
