The new EU directive on uniform fuel labels, which aims to harmonize the identification of fuel throughout the continent, address the current and the future needs of the European market and provide a wider access to alternative fuels, will start being implemented in Serbia on October 12. Labels of various shapes with new fuel designations will be mandatory on petrol stations and new vehicles of all categories produced after October 11, 2018.

Directive 2014/94/EU will apply to all 28 member states, as well as Serbia, Macedonia, Turkey, Iceland, Lichtenstein, Norway and Switzerland. Following Brexit, it is up to Great Britain whether to implement the directive or not.

In addition to standardized labels, petrol stations will need to display additional information in national languages, which will help users pick the right type of fuel.

Labels will have to be displayed on fuel-dispensing units and filler nozzles.

Diesel fuel labels will be square and marked B7 or B10, depending on the percentage of biofuel, whereas synthetic diesel fuels will be marked XTL.

Petrol fuel labels will be round and marked E5, E10, or E85, depending on the percentage of bioethanol.

The labels for gaseous fuels will be diamond-shaped and marked H2 (hydrogen), CNG (compressed natural gas), LNG (liquefied natural gas) and LPG (liquefied petroleum gas).

Although old labels should go out of use, fuel will basically remain the same. For example, the new E6 and E10 tags match the current SP98 and SP95 tags.

Distributors nevertheless point out that a certain transitional period will be needed and that the new labels will perhaps not be displayed immediately at all petrol stations.

Drivers of older vehicles are likewise advised to check the amount of biofuel, primarily ethanol, their car can take.
