The Chamber of Commerce of Serbia (CCIS) has launched an initiative for the signing of a bilateral agreement on free trade between Serbia and Egypt, the director of the sector for foreign economic relations at the CCIS, Jelena Jovanovic, said today.

At a round table on the upgrade of the economic cooperation between Serbia and Egypt, she said that the trade between the two countries was small, amounting to USD 69.3 million in 2017.

– Serbia exported goods worth USD 30 million to Egypt last year, and imported goods worth USD 39 million, which makes for a deficit of USD 9 million – Jovanovic said.

She added that Serbia mostly exported military products and tobacco to Egypt and that it mostly imported calcium phosphate.

According to her, there are possibilities for export from Serbia in the sectors of agriculture, food and rubber production, as well as in mining, construction, IT industry and the industries of furniture, car components and energy equipment.

Jovanovic said that an initiative for establishing air transport between Belgrade and Cairo had been launched.

Ambassador of Egypt to Serbia Amr Aljowaily said that the aim of the round table was for an action plan on cooperation to be prepared.

– One of the concrete steps in today's meeting will be an agreement about Egypt's participation in business fairs in Serbia and Serbia's participation in fairs in Egypt – Aljowaily said and added that the plan was to also revitalize the business council of the two states and to open a trade cooperation office.
