Tax police in Serbia discovers 102 “phantom” and money laundering companies in first seven months of 2018

Serbian tax police has discovered 102 “phantom” and money laundering companies in the first seven months of 2018 which is an increase of 36% compared to last year, Director of the Tax Administration of Republic of Serbia. Dragana Marković. Said for Vecernje Novosti newspaper.

She said that during that period Public Prosecutor`s Offices pressed 880 criminal charges for the total of 1,024 crimes for tax evasion and over RSD 6.5 billion damage to the state budget.

Markovic said that 66 person were arrested on those charges and added that the tax inspectors confirmed irregularities in tax revenue calculations in 2,162 control cases in the first seven months of 2018.

– Newly-calculated public revenues amounted to RSD 15 billion , mostly through value added tax which amounted to RSD 6.9 billion, excise tax amounted to RSD 3.4 billion , withholding tax to RSD 3 billion and individual income tax amounted to RSD 1.4 billion, she pointed out

She further stated that the turnover control through fiscal cash registers showed irregularities in 1,041 businesses which is why the misdemeanor warrants and temporary bans on performing activity have been issued, while 5 businesses have been closed for up to 90 days for repeated offense.


– The trend of growth of tax revenue in Serbian Tax Administration, present since 2015, has continued this year when in the first seven months of 2018 tax income amounted to RSD 839.4 billion which is a 6.1% increase compared to the same period last year, Markovic underlined.

According to her, RSD 189.2 billion gross domestic VAT was collected, which is a 7.9% increase, excise tax collection had a 2.6% increase, to RSD 114.8 billions and compulsory social insurance revenue had a 9% increase , to RSD 350.2 billion.

Tax Administration was lacking economists, lawyers and IT experts, Markovic said.
