The Government of Moldova has announced that it will wait for the new Romanian gas pipeline to be built instead of extending the agreement with the Russian energy company Gazprom.

Moldovan Economy Minister Chiril Gaburici said on TVC21 that Moldova, which used to rely on Russia for gas supply, would wait for the 120-km gas connection from the Romanian border to the Moldovan capital of Kishinev to be built.

The works on the pipeline should begin this month, and the plan is for it to be completed by 2020.

Gaburici said that Moldova wanted to have access to alternative gas sources as soon as possible.

The agreement of Moldova with Gazprom was signed in 2008 and expires in late 2019.

Moldovan President Igor Dodon, who advocates close ties with Moscow, wants the current agreement with Gazprom to be extended.
