Highest nighttime temperature recorded in Oman
The temperature was measured on June 26 and was the lowest point of the temperature over a 24-hour period in Quriyat, a town of about 50,000 residents, as noted by weather expert Maximiliano Herrera.
The previous record was also held by Oman, more specifically, Khasab Airport, some 600 kilometers north of Quriyat, close to the border with the United Arab Emirates.
CNN's senior meteorologist Brandon Miller says that several things factor into that. Both Quriyat and Khasab are along the Gulf of Oman, which Miller explains is one of the warmest bodies of water in the world, with temperatures regularly hitting 30°C.
When the scorching temperatures coming from the Arabian Peninsula and the warm, humid air from the Gulf of Oman meet, you get extreme heat index and extremely high overnight lows because the air can't cool down much at night because of the humidity, Miller explains.
