Viminacium to get military camp, legionnaires' training grounds and adventure park – Opening to take place as part of Limes Congress on September 3
– The plan was for the camp to start working this year, but the public procurement procedure for the construction of the military camp took slightly longer and the weather conditions didn't help either. There's still time and we will prepare ourselves better as far as the features for the next season are concerned. We don't want to rush something that we want to be permanent just to benefit from the season. Instead, we are focusing on quality – Jelena Vukazic, the director of the Tourism Organization of Pozarevac, says for our portal.
The new deadline for the opening of the complex is September 3, when the 24th Limes Congress is scheduled to start, a prestigious science event which will bring together 1,000 world scientists, who will present the results of their archaeological research. This science event, which is held every three years, will be held in Serbia for the first time.
The complex which will welcome the participants of the Limes Congress, they say for our portal, will encompass a military camp, a legionnaires' training grounds and an adventure park.
The carrier of the project of the legionnaires' training grounds and the adventure park is the Tourism Organization of Pozarevac, and the Belgrade Institute of Archaeology is in charge of the replica of the military camp of Claudius' VII legion. The accommodation capacity of the military camp will be 480 beds, and the legionnaires' training grounds will be built right next to it.
The construction of the adventure park and the legionnaires' obstacle-course is worth a total of RSD 30 million, and the funds were approved by the Ministry of Trade, Tourism and Telecommunications. Simkon Kragujevac and Elkoms Belgrade, the only bidders at this public procurement procedure, are the contractors.
The construction of this part of the complex began in early June, and the completion of the entire complex is expected by the end of August.
Although it will welcome its first guests in September, the complex will not open for visitors until the next season.
As Vukazic says, the plan is for this entertainment-educational camp to be active throughout the summer and for groups to shift each 7 days.
– The idea is to introduce children and the young to sciences such as archaeology, anthropology, paleontology, old crafts and many other scouting skills and self-defense techniques through interesting and interactive educational workshops. A replica of the legionnaires' camp, a special legionnaires' obstacle-course and a unique adventure park provide the possibility of unlimited entertainment and an unforgettable experience – Vukazic says.
Instructors trained for working with the young will be employed to work with children. As Jelena Vukazic adds, the instructors' training planned to take place this year has been moved to the spring of 2019, ahead of the camps' opening.
