Management of Constantine the Great Airport given to state
The proposition was adopted with 43 votes in favor, eight against and one withheld vote.
Mayor Darko Bulatovic said at the session that the airport could not finance itself, that the city had invested more than RSD 800 million in subsidies from the budget since 2009 and that the money could have been used to build kindergartens, water and sewer systems and other infrastructural projects.
Minister of Transport Zorana Mihajlovic said that, by supporting the proposition for the state’s management of the airport, the members of the Nis parliament reached “the only possible decision, which will enable new investments and further development of the city airport”. Noting that the decision could have been made over two months before, the minister said that “the state and Nis have lost a lot of money, and damage has been done to the Constantine the Great Airport”.
– Therefore, a great task of compensating for all this lies ahead of the new management. Still, it’s important that the decision on the future of the airport was reached in institutions, not on the street – Mihajlovic said.
The initiative opposing the proposal announced that it would continue fighting for the airport to be returned to Nis, in courts, but also through protests.
