The Ljubljana City Administration expects the construction of the IKEA department store in the capital of Slovenia to begin next year, the Finance portal learns.

The Memorandum on Intent on the construction of the IKEA department store in Ljubljana was signed four years ago by Mayor Zoran Jankovic and the director of the Slovenian office of IKEA, Vladislav Lalic, but IKEA obtained the building permit only last year.

According to the information Finance gathered at the Ljubljana City Administration, IKEA and the competent urban services are intensively working on changing the traffic solution at the access points to the location of the future shopping center within the Business-Commercial Zone BTC City. The changes to the traffic plan are expected to be prepared by the end of the year, and, as Finance notes, without adequate traffic routes around the center, IKEA can't get the exploitation permit.

IKEA began testing the possibility of the construction of a department store in Slovenia back in 2006. At the signing of the said memorandum, it was said that the Ljubljana department store would start working in 2017, and the Slovenian public has been accordingly wondering why the construction is late in the past years.

As a part of the obligations concerning the preparation of the construction and the opening of IKEA Ljubljana was taken over by the Ljubljana City Administration, there were speculations that they had failed to do their part of the job. Last year, IKEA fenced off the location and started removing the buildings and ruins on it.

During the preparations for the investment in Slovenia, IKEA opened shopping centers in Zagreb and Belgrade. Slovenian media also remind that IKEA bought the land in Croatia in 2008, but that the construction began five years later.

According to the plans, IKEA Ljubljana should be around the same size as the shopping centers in Zagreb and Belgrade. It will take up around 31,000 m2 of BTC City, have 300 employees, around 9,500 products and 1,000 parking spaces. The total investment of IKEA in Ljubljana is expected to amount to EUR 80 million.

Let us remind that IKEA opened the first department store in Belgrade on August 10, 2017.
