Mansurbek Sultanov, director at RZD International in Serbia, stated that the company was ready to lay down the first kilometer of the Belgrade-Budapest high-speed railway very soon.

Sultanov said that, as far as they are concerned, everything is ready for the first kilometer of tracks to be laid down on the Stara Pazova-Novi Sad section, part of the high-speed railway, in late June or early July.

He said that the construction of the biggest rail facility, the tunnel and the viaduct on Fruska Gora, was in progress. As he said, the construction entails two tubes of the 2.2-km tunnel, which is located in the extension of the 3.2-km viaduct and which will be equipped for speeds of 200 km/h.

– This is the hardest section from Belgrade to Budapest and the works are progressing at full speed – Sultanov said.

According to him, the works financed from the Russian loan of USD 800 million, with the contribution by Serbia of USD 140 million, are going according to plan, though there are problems concerning property issues. As he said, 27 diesel trains worth USD 100 million were procured with the proceeds from the loan, each with 160 seats, and they are all commissioned.

The acting director of the Infrastructure of the Serbian Railways, Miroljub Jeftic, thanked the government for the EUR 6 billion investment in the Serbian railways. As he said, these are projects of construction of the high-speed railway from Belgrade to Subotica, the Nis-Dimitrovgrad railway, the bypass route around Nis and the electrification of the railway and the construction of the Nis-Brestovac railway.
