The European Union could impose preliminary measures to safeguard its steel and aluminum industries as early as July, EU Trade Commissioner Cecilia Malmstrom said on Monday, June 4, 2018.

She said, however, that a full investigation would take nine months, Reuters reports.

– We can take pre-measures in July already. This is what we are going to discuss – she stated and added there was already anecdotal evidence of steel intended for the U.S. market being diverted to Europe by U.S. tariffs.

The U.S.A. implemented the tariffs on the import of steel and aluminum from Europe, Canada and Mexico on June 1, following which the targeted countries announced countermeasures to this decision made by President Donald Trump's administration.
