TRIVAN: Mini HPPs not to be built on Stara Planina

The signatures of the competent state institutions on permits for the construction of mini hydro power plants on Stara Planina will be withdrawn, as will be the permit for the construction of a HPP on the river Visocica in Paklestica near Pirot.

This was announced in Pirot by Minister of Ecology Goran Trivan, who said that it was a protected natural good in the area and that he was personally against the construction of SHPPs in areas with protected natural goods. The operations of those already built on the Knjazevac side of the mountain, he added, will be monitored.

Ahead of the fifth public discussion about the draft proposition of the law on climate change, Trivan stated that all sector policies needed to be in line with this law.

Mayor of Pirot Vladan Vasic said that the local self-government was not in charge of the permits which regulate the construction of SHPPs, but that the Spatial Plan of the Republic of Serbia envisaged the construction of the said centrals on Stara Planina and that a pertinent land register existed as well.

– As a city, we take care of the environment, as proven by the fact that we have built a sanitary regional landfill, that we are removing asbestos from the water network, that we are to start building a water plant soon and that we have replaced all mazut-fueled furnaces in schools with biomass-fueled ones.

According to the data shown to eKapija by the Ministry of Construction, transport and Infrastructure, four building permits for the construction of SHPPs in the Stara Planina area were issued in 2017.
