The loan in amount of 90m EUR was approved last year for the complete overhaul of the tram motor pool and infrastructure in Belgrade. The funds from this loan will be spent on reconstruction of total of 33 kilometers of tram tracks and overhaul of 60 trams.

The tram tracks have been replaced in Jurija Gagarina Street and Proleterske Solidarnosti Street in New Belgrade, as well as in Nemanjina Street and on Autokomanda. The replacement of tram tracks in Vojvode Mišića Boulevard started at the same time as the works on broadening of Savska Street. Total of 1,700 meters of tram tracks from Gospodarska Mehana to Savska Street will be replaced.

Reconstruction of the tracks in Vojvode Mišića Boulevard, which is in the jurisdiction of the Secretariat for Transportation, started at the same time as the reconstruction of Savska Street that requested stopping of the tram traffic.

- About one kilometer of new tracks will be laid, which will create conditions for introduction of modern low-floor trams that will be faster and more comfortable than the existing ones. Deadline for completion of works is 110 days - says Branko Smiljanić, Deputy City Secretary for TRansportation.

- The open competition for design of project documentation for reconstruction of tram tracks in Vojvode Stepe Street, which is in very bad condition, is expected in the following period - says Smiljanić.

The tram tracks will also be replaced in Vojvode Mišića Boulevard, Vojvode Stepe Street, Kralja Aleksandra Boulevard, Resavska Street, Beogradska Street, Požeška Street and on the section between Autokomanda and Slavija, which is more than 33 kilometers of tracks.

Following the works in Vojvode Mišića Boulevard, the new tracks will be laid in Požeška Street and in Resavska Street, in the section between Nemanjina Street and St. Marko Church. These works will commence next year and they will be followed by organization of tracks in Karađorđeva Street, between hotel "Bristol" and Nemanjina Street.

- It takes minimum two or three years for all tram tracks in Belgrade to be replaced - Smiljanić concludes.

Tracks in Boulevard in central part of the lane

Slaven Tica, the CEO of City Transportation Company "Beograd", points out that the tram tracks in Vojvode Stepe Street are the "youngest" of all tracks in Belgrade. According to his estimated, the tracks in Vojvode Mišića Boulevard should be replaced and that should be followed by the overhaul of tramway in Kralja Aleksandra Boulevard.

- The situation is specific as far as Boulevard is concerned because we must wait for the land-utilization plan to be put in effect and there is idea that the tracks should be laid in the central zone of the lane - says Tica.

Procurement of new trams

20m EUr from the EIB's loan will be spent on the overhaul of 60 trams. However, according to the words of Branko Smiljanić, there will be no repairs and the procurement of new trams is in the pipeline, for which the tender will be announced soon.

- The trams that will be procured will be low-floor trams with special cooling and drag systems and of modern looks - says Smiljanić.
