Smart luggage, equipped with digital technology, has started appearing in airports and terminals. The range of functions it has is vast – from charging mobile phones to a GPS system.

For example, the Berlin-based startup Horizn Studios is selling luggage which connects to smartphones through Bluetooth. In case the distance between the suitcase and the phone exceeds 30 meters, an alarm is activated.

– Our goal is to make traveling more comfortable and carefree – says founder Stefan Holwe.

Other companies are looking to implement as much digital technology as possible when it comes to luggage usage.

The American company BlueSmart offers a suitcase which self-locks when at a certain distance from the owner. It also has an in-built weight measurement system.

Planet Traveler offers and internet-equipped suitcase called Space Case 1. It can be opened and closed by using a biometric fingerprint. It also has a Bluetooth speaker for playing music or for phone calls and a service app providing notifications on, for example, the opening of exits at airports.

GeoTrakR, a travel bag produced by Samsonite, the biggest global luggage brand, contains an accelerometer enabling the bag to recognize that the flight is in progress and switch itself off so as not to interfere with the airplane electronics. This suitcase is available only in the USA market, whereas the company offers a suitcase with Bluetooth distance monitoring and alarm devices for other customers.

This autumn, Delsey, the second biggest global producer of suitcases, will offer a smart case using an app to inform the owner that it had been placed on a conveyor belt.

It remains to be seen to what extent these options will really be used and what the battery life will be, how much the luggage will weigh and how much room will there be left for other things within the suitcases. Some experts believe that smart luggage will prove to be more of a fad than something people will use regularly.
