The City of Belgrade has placed a public invitation for the submission of final bids for the realization of the Vinca landfill project. The bids will be opened on July 6, 2017, Beoinfo reports.

Following the procedure of validating the qualifications, carried out in October 2015, the city recognized the qualifications of five of eleven companies which had applied for the public-private partnership in providing the services of treatment and disposal of municipal waste.

– The project itself entails remediation and closing of the current landfill, the utilization of the landfill gas in energy production, seepage treatment, construction of a facility for treatment of municipal waste and production of heating and electrical energy, construction of facilities for recycling construction waste and construction of landfill cells in line with the standards of the European Union. The estimated value of capital investments is EUR 300 million – Mayor of Belgrade Sinisa Mali pointed out.

He added that the goal was for the city of Belgrade to get the most reliable and competent partner in this project, so that this big environmental problem would be solved.

– The realization of the project will not only solve the decades-old environmental problem of the Vinca landfill, but also enable the utilization of waste as a resource to a full extent, as well as put a stop to waste disposal and enable the production of energy to be used in the central heating system of Belgrade, while reducing the usage of fossil fuels – Mali said and concluded that this was the way to, among other things, stop the development of fires at the landfill, such as the recent one.

By the decision of the City Assembly of Belgrade of July 2015, the city of Belgrade opted for solving the waste issue through a public-private partnership using contemporary and environmentally safe solutions, which also enable the production of renewable heating and electrical energy.
