The European Union is the biggest donor for the alleviation of the consequences of the floods with over EUR 170 million provided in grants. This spring, the works on developing river beds and coastal areas, worth EUR 10 million, will begin in Paracin, Svilajnac and Valjevo.

Petar Janjatovic, Communications Manager of the EU Assistance for Flood Relief in Serbia program, says that 198 projects have been completed so far, “which makes us the biggest donor to Serbia”.

According to him, the project of the preparation of a map of flood risk areas will start soon, which will, as he says, contribute to increasing Serbia's preparedness in cases of similar events.

– We will soon start working on mapping risk areas in Serbia, and the works on developing river beds and coastal areas in Paracin, Svilajnac and Valjevo, worth a total of EUR 10 million, will start in spring – Janjatovic says and adds that the EU support is currently focused on preventive measures and preparedness for flood defense.

– The securing of landslide areas and the damaged road infrastructure in 26 municipalities in Serbia is in progress, and a total of 44 landslides and 14 bridges and crossings will be secured within this EUR 10 million project – Janjatovic explains and adds that the works on cleaning 64 kilometers of drainage canals in Obrenovac and Surcin, worth around EUR 440,000, are in progress.

The program data show that 2,163 damaged houses have been reconstructed in Serbia, as well as that 1,037 agricultural producers, micro, small and medium enterprises have been provided with help in reestablishing their operations in the form of building materials for the reconstruction of premises, equipment and raw materials.

– We've managed to reconstruct 14 primary and secondary schools, a kindergarten and a school gym, enabling nearly 14 thousand children, students, teachers and other employees to continue with their education and their work – Janjatovic says and adds that two bridges were built in Kraljevo, as well as a school in Obrenovac.

As the assistance program members emphasize, the infrastructural works have been performed by local construction companies exclusively.
