EPS to invest EUR 1 billion in ecology by 2026 – Desulfurization, denitrification and water filtering projects planned
He pointed out that EPS was capable of carrying out certain environmental projects by itself, but that it also expected further support form the European Commission and that he hoped Serbia would earn it.
– We have replaced the filters in all larger facilities and started the denitrification with the support of EC. By this autumn, we will have agreed on jobs pertaining to the desulfurization facility in the Unit A of the Nikola Tesla Thermal Power Plant – Antic said and pointed out that the facility alone cost EUR 200 million.
Acting Director of EPS, Milorad Grcic, hopes that the investment of EUR 1 billion will enable EPS to modernize the production facilities in the next nine years and bring them up to the European level of environmental protection.
The expected effects of the measures to be implemented by EPS by 2026 are the reduction of the emission of nitrogen oxides by around 46%, of sulfuric oxides by around 92% and of powder particles by around 84% compared to 2013.
Since 2000, EPS has invested EUR 200 million in environmental protection and realized 17 environmental projects achieving a higher level of air, water and earth protection in Serbia. Six of these projects have been implemented with the support of EU as one of the most important partners of EPS in reaching European environmental standards.
EU has set aside a donation of EUR 58,85 million through the IPA funds for electrical filters, water treatment, constant measuring of toxic matter emission in thermal power plants and safe ash depositing. EPS has so far installed or reconstructed electrical filters in 14 thermal units.
Christian Danielsson, EC Director for Enlargement, pointed out that EU had invested EUR 500 million in the energy sector of Serbia since 2000.
