The company GE Power Services has announced that it will complete the modernization of the Nikola Tesla thermal power plant (TENT), EPS’ biggest coal-fueled power plant in Serbia, in 2017. The steam turbines provided by GE will increase the output power, reduce operating and maintenance costs, as well as carbon emission through lower coal consumption, the company reported.

– TENT provides a major part of electricity within the energy system of Serbia – said the executive energy production manager of EPS, Savo Bezmarevic, and added that it was necessary for those units to work at the highest level of availability, efficiency and reliability, as it was crucial for Serbia to have a consistent supply of electricity.

The power plant has two LMZ steam engines of 210 MW and four (A3-A6) GE units of 308 MW. GE will deliver the solution for the revitalization of the steam engine for the high- , medium- and low-pressure turbine models, as well as the new system of turbine management. The project includes GE’s advanced 3-D blades, new rotors, rotor blades, internal and external casings and accompanying parts.

As envisioned by the agreement, GE will deliver the largest generator yet seen in Serbia, to be installed at TENT B2, so as to enhance the availability and reliability of the power plant.

– EPS will continue the modernization and revitalization to the end of securing stable supply, in line with the Government of Serbia’s strategy for the construction of a more modern and efficient electricity system in Serbia – said Milorad Grcic, General Manager of JP Elektroprivreda Srbije.

– Steam engines will get a new life cycle after 250,000 hours of work, and the unit’s working power will be increased by 24 MW – Grcic added.

The steam turbine’s life cycle of close to 250,000 working hours will be extended by an additional 100,000 working hours, whereas the major overhaul deadline period will be extended to nearly 10 years.

It is expected that the revitalization of the steam turbine will begin in May 2017 and that it will be put into operation in October 2017, the report says.

– The latest analysis performed by GE determined that the emission of carbon-dioxide from coal and gas power plants in the world could be reduced by 10% with full implementation of existing hardware and software solutions – stated General Manager of GE Power Services Europe, Pascal Schweitzer.

– We are proud of the fact that our long-term cooperation with EPS will be enhanced through the implementation of our latest technological solutions, so as to help the company generate clean energy more efficiently, in line with Serbia’s environmental goals – Schweitzer added.
