Construction of Stara Pazova-Novi Sad railway to begin in February 2017 – Estimated cost of works USD 338 million
The annex to the agreement on the Russian loan for the construction of a new railway and modernizing the existing railways, signed this summer, will be implemented through this project. The cost of works has been estimated at USD 338 million.
This July, the Ministry of Transport signed an agreement with the Russian Railways on the beginning of the construction of the new railway to Novi Sad, in the length of 44 kilometers. The works will be performed in two phases, the first of which entails the most demanding part of the project.
The plan was to begin with the first phase in October. However, the deadlines have been moved due to a slow process of land expropriation and the issuing of the building permit.
– Unfortunately, we've been told that the plan has changed slightly, so we expect the building permit to be issued in February – says Mansurbek Sultanov, first deputy manager of RZD International.
That the works will start in February has been confirmed by the director of Infrastruktura Zeleznice Srbije, Dusan Garibovic. However, it is not known when the second phase, which entails the construction of the open railway Stara Pazova-Novi Sad, will begin.
– The project for the second phase has been prepared as well and we hope that the agreement will be signed soon and that the works on the open railway Stara Pazova-Novi Sad will begin in 2017 – Garibovic says.
Aside from Russian companies, Serbian companies will take part in the realization of the project (49%).
New high-speed trains will be running at the future Stara Pazova-Novi Sad railway as well. These trains can run at up to 200 km/h. A total of 27 new trains will be shipped from Russia to Serbia in early 2017. If everything goes according to plan, the works should be completed within 55 months.
