With 142GW of electricity produced, wind was the third most important source of energy in the European Union in 2015, behind gas and coal. As much as 11.4% of overall energy consumption in all 28 countries of the European Union is covered by wind farms, while gas (21.1%) and coal (17.5%) satisfy nearly 40% of energy needs.
A record investment of EUR 26.4 billion was made in wind energy projects Europe-wide in 2015, 40% more than in 2014. Germany is responsible for almost a half of that investment.
The list of EU countries with the highest wind farm capacity is topped by Germany with 45GW, which is followed by Spain with 23GW, Great Britain with 13.6GW and France with 10.4GW.
