A large number of our citizens spend New Year’s and Christmas holidays abroad. Ski season is at its peak and local fans of snow often opt for foreign winter centers instead of local ones.

Before travelling abroad, everyone is interested in the prices of transport, accommodation, shopping and tours, but there is an aspect which is sometimes forgotten - travel health insurance.

As AXA osiguranje says for eKapija, travel insurance is a good example of increased awareness of the importance of insurance among the citizens of Serbia. Numerous cases which happened in the previous years and which proved that with relatively low investment, adequate help can be provided in emergencies abroad, brought about a growth of interest in insurance.

In short, this type of insurance provides protection in case of sudden disease and injuries during a stay abroad. Policy depends on the selected insurance package. Most insurance companies offer two or three different packages of travel health insurance – standard, medium and higher.

Standard package covers the costs of hospital treatment, drugs, sanitary material and orthopedic devices, outpatient treatment, stomatology treatment, surgery, transport to the doctor’s, repatriation in the country of residence, evacuation, etc.

Some insurance companies such as Wiener Stadtische will enable you to insure yourself against the risk of the loss of luggage, money and documents.

The longer the stay, the cheaper the insurance
The amount of insurance premium to pay depends on where you travel, the purpose of your trip and the length of stay, your age, as well as on whether you travel alone, with the family, or with a group.
Prices are approximately the same across all domestic insurance companies, which they explain by saying that all participants in that market form their prices in a similar way. As people at Wiener Stadtische osiguranje explain to eKapija, prices are formed on the basis of statistical parameters that indicate the probability of occurrence of a risk.
As a rule, the longer the travel, the cheaper the price of insurance per day. For example, a 14-day insurance package with the EUR 35,000 coverage for a travel within the European Union will cost you RSD 99 per day at the insurance company AXA osiguranje. However, if you are going on a journey that lasts for maximum three days, the price is RSD 115 per day.
Insurance will be much more expensive if you travel to the United States of America. If you're going across the pond, travel insurance will cost you RSD 890 per day, and if you're staying there for three months or longer, the price will drop to RSD 560 per day for the EUR 40,000 coverage.
What if...
In case of an accident you're insured against, it is necessary to stick to primary rules, and the most important is to call the Assistance Center right away or show the insurance policy to the doctor or hospital staff and ask them to do that instead of you if you're not able.
When buying a policy, always ask if there is minimum limit on the costs you need to cover yourself, that is, ask if there are services you are to pay by yourself and then get a refund from the insurance company. Of course, you need to keep the original medical documentation and original bills for further reference.
One thing you should never do is go to a medical institution without previously checking if it is part of the network covered by your insurance package because you can stay without a refund for medical costs regardless of the emergency of intervention.
