In the next ten years, 1,2 billionof young people in EU will be ready for the labor market and only 300 millionwill have a secure job. In Croatia and Serbia every second young man up to 25is unemployed, in Macedonia 53%, and in Bosnia and Herzegovina some 60%. If wedo not offer to young people to solve their existence through entrepreneurial projectsand bigger labor market flexibility, consequences for the entire society willbe tremendous, Carmen Majetic Pavic, programhead of the HR Business Arena says for eKapija.

HR Business Arena became a platform for socially useful initiative whose objectiveis to initiate cooperation of regional companies and public educational sector. As a result of the need for successful integration of the younger than 18 to30, in April this year, a memorandum of mutual initiative of the employment ofthe youth in the region was signed in Dubrovnik which will last in the nextthree years (Youth Employment Initiativein the Region). The document has been signed by 24 companies and at the recently held conference in Belgarde Biomelem,WIFI Hrvatska, HRPRO and Ernst & Young Srbija joined.

Signees of the Document agreed upon mutual cooperation to support more intensiveintegration of economy, educational system, representatives of state-ownedinstitutions and local self -governance. Governmental institutions are tryingto decrease unemployment rate but they cannot deal with it on their own,Matejic Pavic thinks. It is necessary that companies take on a portion ofresponsibility.

The content of the Document is not obliging for companies. It is a moral andethical code and social responsibility where every company within its optionsand employment programs will provide their contribution and cooperate withother signees.

- In the next three years, we expect new employment projects, larger number of internships followed by employment of the best candidates, mobilization of bigger number of the unemployed and active participation in working processes. We will organize coaching & mentoring programs, provide support to entrepreneurship and self-employment of the young, ensure scholarships for talented young people, organize volunteering, cooperate more intensively with students’ associations, etc.

It is particularly important, Majetic Pavic thinks, more adequateconnection and decrease of gap between educational system and labor marketneeds. The basic problem of the system in the region is the focus on adoptionof factographic knowledge without active participation of students in lectures. In order to decrease differences in support development of schools, continuous cooperationbetween educational and economic sector is essential as well as implementation ofpermanent system of external evaluation and monitoring of the work of schools. Our collocutor thinks it would be useful to introduce the subject Entrepreneurshipin high schools so that the youth would be supported to nourish their entrepreneurshipideas and proactive approach.

Changes are certain to happen andfor the values new generations are bringing. So-called Generation Y includes peoplewho are individual and against authority. Their perception of a boss is nottraditional, they see it more as their friend, mentor or coach.
