Although the structure between the Ada Bridge and the Gazela Bridge was supposed to become a pedestrian-cycling corridor, the city authorities now have another idea.

The deputy mayor of Belgrade, Goran Vesic, says for Novosti that they intent to expand it and open it for tram traffic. The Faculty of Civil Engineering is currently preparing a study to the end of testing the Old Rail Bridge.

– If the project shows that the bridge’s columns can withstand it, we would expand it slightly and open it for tram traffic. According to the calculations, it should be expanded by a meter on each side. The idea is to then have the tram traffic connection from New Belgrade at the Belgrade Fairgrounds. In New Belgrade, we would have to connect the bridge with Vladimira Popovica Street.

We would use that bridge for tram traffic and it would also act as a tram connection while the New Sava Bridge is being built – reveals the deputy mayor.

The Old Rail Bridge on the Sava has been in a poor condition for years now. Three years ago, there was talk about it being turned into a pedestrian-cycling route by 2021 at the latest.

Its repurposing was envisaged in the amendments to the Regional Spatial Plan of the City of Belgrade Administrative Territory, which was up for public review in October 2017.

The bridge was built in 1884 as that first “solid” bridge that made Serbia part of Europe.
