As one of the most traffic-clogged cities in Europe, Rome is planning to ban diesel cars from the city center by 2024.

– If we want to intervene seriously, we have to have the courage to adopt strong measures – announced Mayor Virginia Raggi.

Her comments follow a court ruling in Germany by which German cities allowed to instill bans on diesel cars as part of the effort to counter air pollution.

Around two thirds of the total of 1.8 million new cars sold in Italy last year were diesel vehicles. There are no major industrial facilities in Rome and the air pollution is therefore primarily down to the usage of motor vehicles.
