Crop Farmers Worried About Drought, But Above Average Wheat Yields Expected

The war in Ukraine and the drought have significantly disturbed the global wheat market. The price is at an all-time high, and nearly everybody is worried that there will not be enough of it this year. Looking at the state of the crops, Serbia, as usual, will have more wheat than the local needs require, though the yields will be lower than last year due to the drought.

According to the experts, there will be enough wheat in Serbia, even exceeding the average local needs, which amount to 1.7 million tons.

– Initially, we expected an average yield, at a level of 4.8 tons per hectare. But, judging by everything we’ve seen in the field, we expect a yield of 5.2 tons per hectare, certainly over three million tons. The truth is that the level of moisture in both the soil and the surface layer is somewhat lower than last year, and let me remind that, last year, we had a record harvest and that we can’t have one record after another – points out Suncica Savovic of the Association Serbia Grains.
